Morris Help Take the Weight of World Leading Tissue Production Factory

Morris Material Handling, the UK’s leading crane and hoist manufacturer based in Loughborough has recently designed, built and installed three overhead travelling cranes for LPC (UK).

LPC (UK) Limited, the country’s largest independent manufacturer of specialist paper products, has recently moved to a new purpose built, state-of-the-art production facility in Leicestershire and has invested heavily in new equipment. This has included the acquisition of a new paper mill to manufacture new technology tissue paper and to convert it into rolls. The mill is reputed to be the best of its type in the world.

The new Morris cranes are designed to lift rolls of paper at different stages of the production process, with the capacity of the three cranes ranging from five to twenty tonnes. The two larger capacity cranes are both double girder, remote controlled cranes. One has a lifting capacity of twenty tonnes and spans twenty-two and a half metres. The other spans thirty-two and a half metres and has a lifting capacity of fifteen tonnes with a thirteen tonne motorised lifting beam that rotates though 180 degrees.

The double girder cranes are fitted with two hoists that work in tandem. Electronic load summation devices were fitted along with the load limiters to protect the cranes from damaging overloads and ensure safe and efficient operation. The crane designs also incorporate IP55 protection to protect them from the dusty environment. The smallest of the three is a five tonne single girder manually operated crane.

Following the commissioning of the cranes, the Morris Training Institute provided LPC UK’s training officer with 5 days tuition in overhead travelling crane operations with the company’s ‘train the trainer’ programme.

Morris also provided LPC (UK)’s six, recently appointed, crane operators with tuition in safe crane operation, which includes lifting and slinging and centre of gravity assessment, along with basic unladen control. The training also incorporated the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).

LPC also awarded Morris with a service contract for the maintenance of its cranes. Says Dick Kemp, Project Consultant for LPC: “We selected Morris cranes for our new factory because of their renowned crane building expertise, their parts availability and local support.

Morris has sixteen service centres throughout the UK to service new and old Morris and non-Morris Cranes.
